The Courts Service is responsible for managing and running the courts in Ireland, and for supporting the judges and everyone who uses the courts. Established under the Courts Service Act 1998, we are an independent statutory body.
What we do
Our main functions are to:
- manage the courts
- support the judges
- provide information about the courts system to the public
- provide court buildings and facilities for court users
The Courts Service has no role in the administration of justice — that is a matter for the courts and the judiciary. Under the Constitution, judges are entirely independent in the exercise of their judicial functions.

How we are governed and run
The Courts Service Board sets policy for the Service and oversees how that policy is carried out. Day-to-day management is led by the Chief Executive Officer — who is also the Accounting Officer for the Service — together with the Senior Management Team.
