Personal insolvency cases take place in the Circuit court and High court.
The Circuit Court can hear cases where the debts are less than €2.5 million.
The High Court hears cases where the debts are more than €2.5 million.
The majority of personal insolvency cases involve debt amounts of less than €2.5 million and are heard in the Circuit Court.
Where your application is made
There is one court office per circuit dealing with personal insolvency matters for that circuit . A circuit may cover a number of counties.
- If you live in Cork, your application will be made in the Cork office
- If you live in Dublin, your application will be made in the Dublin office
- If you live in Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim or Monaghan, your application will be made in the Monaghan office
- If you live in Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, Roscommon, Longford or Sligo, your application will be made in the Tullamore office
- If you live in Kildare, Meath, Louth or Wicklow, your application will be made in the Trim office
- If you live in Galway or Mayo, your application will be made in the Castlebar office
- If you live in Clare, Kerry or Limerick your application will be made in the Ennis office
- If you live in Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford or Wexford your application will be made in the Kilkenny office
